Suruli Cave Temple near Thekkady, Cumbum.


Suruli Cave Temple has been transforming towards a pilgrim destination from the past few years. The Tamil Nadu government has taken initiative to uplift the infrastructure of the temple and its premises. During Sabarimala (a famous South Indian pilgrim destination in Kerala) plenty of domestic devotees gathering here for worship.
The festive seasons of Suruli Cave Temple are Chithirai Uthsav in April-May, Adi celebrations in July-August, Vaikunda Ekadashi, Thaipoosam, and Shivarathri, etc.
The temple opens at 8 am and closes at 4 pm. The temple is situated amid the dense forest. The spiritual atmosphere of the temple and its premises are enthralling. The visitors are not allowed to enter the forest. The temple is closed at 4 pm because of the en-route is dense forest and it is for the sake of the visitors because wild animals may harm them. Suruli Temple has an adjacent small stream cascades from approximately 50 feet above the rock top. This waterfall is known as Suruli Waterfalls. People across the state and outside the state used to visit this waterfalls. For devotees, the water has a medicinal effect thus people used to bath here before visiting the temple. Among the side of the waterfalls, there have 18 caves represents Indian The rock-cut architecture of the 11th century. People give due divinity to these caves.

History of Suruli Cave Temple
This old mighty spiritual place has an epic legacy. The myths related to the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi. The marriage was held at the Himalaya, all the Goddess, Rishis, and all the dignitaries were present there. Due to this gathering, the north-south balance of the earth was lost. Then Lord Shiva sent Saint Agasthya to sit in the southern part of the earth. He chose a hill to sit. He sat on the valley of the hill. As he sat here he cannot witness the holly marriage. Thus Lord Shiva facilitated him to see the holly marriage. He sat on a cave to see it. Later the cave is known as Kailasa Cave and the hill is known as Agasthya Malai.
The temple and the cave have many surprising features. A tree was wrapped over the cave has been transforming to rock. The leaves of the Tree has a magical feature that if we put it in the water for 48 hours. Suruli has several other caves they are known Sarpaguhai, Vibuthi Guhai, Krishna Guhai, and Kannimar Guhai.

Suruli Temple’s Contribution to Tourism
Suruli waterfalls are famous as a tourist and pilgrimage destination. It was mentioned in the Tamil epic Silpathikaram written by Ilango Adigal. Even though it is famous as a tourist destination lack of infrastructure puts barricades to its popularity and accessibility. The place is nestled in the midst of a dense forest, and stunning music of birds are endless relaxation to wandering minds. The devotees of Suruli Temple believes the water of the Stream is divine and has a medicinal effect.

The suruli cave temple is part of the reserve forest of Tamil Nadu. Human intervention has restricted here. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department has been organizing summer festival regularly in Suruli. The recent government decision is to uplift the infrastructural requirements of the destination by putting solar lamps all the way to the waterfalls. The government is planning to build a bridge across the Suruli River that would connect the temple located 5 km away from the falls. Suruli Waterfalls and Cave Temple are emerging both as a tourist and pilgrimage spot in Tamil Nadu.
Suruli waterfalls and temple located 123 km from Madurai and 21 km from Thekkady another tourist destination of South India. The nearest town to Suruli is Cumbum.
